INsight/ Loosening Leadership Reactivity
/Jakarta, 24 July 2026 — How does leadership spontaneity become available?
Story
Experienced leaders prepare well. They draw on years of expertise and seek clarity and control when situations bring uncertainty, helping them navigate challenge after challenge.
Repeating these behaviors, however, can easily turn into habitual patterns of reactivity, causing leaders to take over before situations have fully unfolded.
In contrast, executives who have developed leadership spontaneity will respond creatively to new situations rather than reacting from habit, creating space for innovative solutions to emerge.
Challenge
Developing leadership spontaneity is long-term work. In our experience, it unfolds through three enduring developmental challenges.
The first is recognizing how reactivity can take over before a situation has fully unfolded. The second is discovering that preparation, expertise, and control can prevent new responses from becoming available. And the third is working on the gradual loosening of habitual reactivity to allow more creative responses to become available.
In our work with executive leaders, we have found that this deeper development unfolds over time through deliberate practice, reflection, and executive coaching. Through this work, habitual reactivity gradually loosens and leadership spontaneity becomes more available.
Question
Every leader develops habitual ways of responding under pressure. Over time, these habits narrow what responses become available
Leadership spontaneity takes years to emerge. Deeper leadership development gradually expands what responses become available.
What becomes possible when leaders respond creatively to the present situation rather than reacting from habitual patterns?
