Manila, 8 January 2020 — These three mistakes with your vision will hold you back.

How have you started the new year? Now that the celebrations are over, it’s a safe guess that you are planning what you want to achieve. Good on you: keep at it!

Possibly, you’re also looking ahead at the new decade and are wondering what bigger changes you can accomplish! Well done: that will set you apart from those who are preoccupied with what they want in the near future.

The way most people go about this is what they are familiar with: to make new year resolutions. You can think of them as your goals for the year. And you would be wrong.

While setting goals is a valuable investment, research shows that most resolutions you make in January will fall by the wayside soon after.

Why is that?

There are quite a few reasons for it, actually.

The one I want to highlight today is that to be effective with your goal setting, you need a vision that gives you the reasons and motivation to keep working on your goals until you achieve them.

Mistake 1: Goals without a Vision

Rushing to make goals without having a vision is, therefore, the first mistake I see people make. Does this sound like you? Then give yourself the gift of time to make a vision first. What should it look like? Keep reading.

Mistake 2: Vision without a Future

For those who do create their vision, the second common mistake is that they create it too small. Often, that’s because you haven’t looked far enough into the future.

That way, it’s easy to miss out on major changes that are waiting to happen and that will motivate and drive you when they’re part of your vision.

Mistake 3: Vision from the Past

The third mistake I see people making with their vision is to keep themselves imprisoned in the past, like a prisoner who has subconsciously grown accustomed to wearing shackles.

In such a state, stepping into abundance can be simply overwhelming, and that becomes another way to miss out on living with a powerful, transformational vision that allows you to embody the change you wish to see.

When you learn to avoid these three mistakes, it will help you to make your vision the right way. In turn, that experience will empower you to set and achieve the goals you want for your new year and decade.

That’s why in the Grow3Leaders community we chose the theme for this month to be about getting your vision created the right way.
