Jakarta, 1 January 2020 — How will you lead in the Decisive Decade?

We have started a new year and decade.

17 Global Goals

This is the decade in which We, the world community, have to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Each of these goals represents a scale of ambition and endeavor that has never before been seen in human history. Let alone for all the 17 goals together.

No wonder they’re called the Global Goals. They call for far-reaching changes to be made in economies, societies, cities, rural areas, and natural environments.

To make those happen, however, the toughest change is in people.

The changes go far beyond tweaking and optimizing current systems, which is the domain of experienced managers. The call is for better leadership, at all levels.

Encouraging Signs

In 2019, we were fortunate to see some encouraging signs of changes being championed more energetically than before, and in the right direction.

Young leaders took to the streets in massive numbers, bankers started echoing the messages coming form science, and a bold green deal was announced by the incoming European Commission.

As is often the case, such encouraging political and economic signals didn’t happen across the board—with exception of the global school-strike movement—but rather among a group of early adopters.

With the unprecedented amounts of data available and the widespread reporting, we also know who the laggards are. The world community’s negotiations of the next climate agreement have slowed, but not stopped, because of their resistance.

Heeding the Call

Such setbacks along the way are to be expected. Yet I believe that the relentless calls for change will lead more political leaders to choose to do right and accelerate investments for climate action and the 16 other Global Goals.

To make it work, all of us need to play a role in this Decisive Decade. The question is if you heed the call, or let politicians and others lead while you carry on with work and personal life in ways that only allow for modest incremental improvements.

The decade will go by fast and a quick decision is needed. The call is for personal choices about what to prioritize and do with your life in this Decisive Decade.

My choice is to heed the call and work intensively with executives, professionals, and emerging leaders who are determined to create decisive changes in their workplace and grow more leaders while they’re at it. Are you one of them?

What's on your priority list for expanding your leadership in 2020 and playing a significant role in the Decisive Decade?
