INsight/ (Re)turning Your Attention
/Manila, 7 August 2026 — How do leaders stay focused on what matters most?
Story
Executive leaders continually move their attention.
Their attention can be captured by competing priorities, urgent requests, unfinished conversations, and thoughts about what comes next. Without noticing, it can drift away from what matters most.
The most effective leaders are not those who maintain perfect attention. They are those who repeatedly notice where their attention has gone and intentionally (re)turn it to the person, purpose, or conversation that most needs them.
Challenge
Leadership attention is not something leaders achieve once and then keep. It is an ongoing practice.
The first challenge is recognizing when attention has drifted. The second is noticing what has captured it. The third is intentionally (re)turning attention to what matters most, again and again.
In our work with executive leaders, we have found that this continual practice develops over time through deliberate reflection, practice, and executive coaching. As leaders strengthen this capacity, their presence, judgment, and leadership become more intentional.
Question
Leadership is not the practice of maintaining perfect attention.
It is the continual practice of (re)turning attention to what matters most.
What becomes possible when leaders continually (re)turn their attention to what matters most?
