INsight/ Navigate Your Transition

Manila, 23 April 2025 — What kind of leadership transition do you want to navigate?

Story

It happened over the past month. Well over a hundred water and sustainability professionals from Asia, Australia, and the Pacific started a transition to become leaders of positive change in their projects and workplaces.

What kind of transition? That varies. Many chose to become team leaders. Others want to become champion leaders, adaptive leaders, thought leaders, strategic leaders, trusted advisors, and executive leaders. Some are still discovering their choices of leadership roles.

What they share is a commitment to navigate their leadership transitions and become effective change makers in their work and life. It starts with growing self-leadership to understand where they are coming from, where they are now, and where they are going. That is not as easy as it sounds. What are the challenges?

Challenge

When it comes to navigating a leadership transition, the first challenge is to expand our self-awareness. What do we bring to the table? What is our vision or purpose for the transition? What are our top values and strengths to build on? What are the fears, shadows, self-limiting beliefs, and other weaknesses to overcome?

The second challenge is about practicing rather than gathering more knowledge. Without starting a deliberate and consistent practice, there will be no change to speak of, let alone a transformation. Navigating a transition requires daily practice. Only those who do the work will experience the results they want to see, and more.

The third challenge is to collaborate. In our 21st century, collaboration is more important than ever before. Leadership is a social process of influence, and that means collaborating with others, even in our self-leadership work. Leadership happens in relationships, where giving, receiving, and asking for feedback are essential behaviors.

Question

The turbulence in our world calls for more effective leaders at all levels of our organizations, from executives to managers and emerging leaders, and across all generations in the workplace (Boomers, Gen X, Y, and Z).

What kind of leadership transition do you want to navigate? That is the question to consider this week. Please let us know your response. We love to hear from you.
