ACTivity/ Find The Magic
Singapore, 16 October 2019 — When is your next encounter with the extraordinary?
“The extraordinary is closer than you think—discover it one conversation at a time.”
Leadership is, often, just a different point of view. When you look around, what do you see? What magic do you encounter?
To find The Magic, the extraordinary, you can start looking here:
Things & places
Situations & experiences
The people in your network.
Today, let’s look at the people.
The leaders I coach will spend time discovering The Magic in others. They learn to ask powerful questions and then listen attentively to the responses. They make themselves available to the people they approach, choosing to give before they take.
To practice this skill, they will make an effort to expand their conversations, both with people in their network, to get to know them better, and with people they don’t know yet, to bring them into their network.
What holds you back as a leader from getting better at this skill of expanding your conversations? For most people, the answer is simple: being too full of yourself, including your good intentions and solutions.
When is the last time you had a remarkable conversation where you discovered something Magic unexpectedly in another person, by being fully there for that other person, and by listening attentively?
In the Grow3Leaders community, we make it a point to practice this skill at least once a week, on #WalkingWednesday, when we will walk—literally or figuratively—to meet people where they are, and enter into a good conversation. There is much to learn from these experiences.
When you join Grow3Leaders, you commit to influencing a change in your workplace (business, organization, or project) together with three colleagues you invite to join you. We call this the Grow3Leaders challenge.
You are expected to form a small team that we call a Collab, because you will work together (Col as in collaborate) and experiment (Lab as in laboratory) with modern ways of influencing positive change in support of a bigger purpose, like sustainability.
What you will have in common with the other members of the community is a commitment to influence change in your workplace, and to share your on-the-job experiences, challenges, and inspirations as you make the change happen.
If that touches a chord with you, then visit Grow3Leaders to request your invitation to join us, free of charge, and not free of commitment. Our community’s theme for October is how leaders can connect with their audience.
When will you have your next encounter with The Magic in people? Leaders don’t wait—they make it happen.
Discovering the extraordinary in people around you, one conversation at a time, is a great way to connect at a deeper level, in order to influence positive changes. That’s what leaders learn to do.
